Environmental monitoring


Scanmatic provides stations for environmental monitoring for users at home and abroad. The deliveries are mostly delivered to government organizations, industrial customers or municipal customers. Examples of the use of the stations are:

  • Measurement of air pollution
  • Measurement of gas pollution
  • Measurement of odor
  • Measurement of radioactivity


The drives consist of a field station or data logger equipped with one or more sensors. The solution is powered from 230 V AC or from a solar panel, and it is additionally equipped with a backup battery. Smaller stations are battery operated, and it can take many years between each time the battery is replaced. The stations communicate with a data collection system over different communication media. A typical communication medium is cellular networks based on 2G or 4G technologies. Examples of other communication media are fiber, radio and satellite.

The sensor is often installed on the mast and the station is mounted in a noticeable manner. It is equipped with the necessary surge protection so that it is not damaged by surges in thunderstorms.

Different types of sensor technology are used to measure different environmental parameters:

  • Optical sensor for measuring air particles e.g. a range of PM1, PM2.5, PM10, PM100 and TSP for air quality e.g. from mining facilities, open quarries, infrastructure development or power plants.
  • Chemical sensors for measuring gases in the air e.g. a selection of CO2, CO, SO2, NO, NO2, NOx and O3 for measuring air pollution from traffic, shipping or industrial plants.
  • Chemical sensors for measuring SO2, H2S, NH3, CH3SH, CH4, CH2O, NO2, Cl2 and TVOC for measuring odor from wastewater treatment plants, industrial plants or garbage disposal.
  • Geiger counters and spectrometer for dose measurement of gamma radiation for monitoring of radioactive radiation
  • In addition, it may be common to measure some other meteorological parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, wind direction, wind strength, rainfall intensity, rainfall type, water level, acoustic noise, UV radiation and light level.

Measurement data is collected regularly in a data collection system, such as Scanmatic’s own H2 system. This system can be connected to existing SCADA systems at the user, and the data can be made available to the user’s personnel via a web portal or an App for tablet / smartphone. The data can also be made available to the public in the Web portal or on the user’s information screens. Alert can be automatically sent out if the pollution levels are too high.
