Scanmatic launches TORDEC at UDT

Scanmatic is proud to introduce TORDEC, a new and innovative torpedo countermeasure designed specifically for surface vessels. TORDEC is based on the proven foundation of our SONDEC system, which has demonstrated high effectiveness as a submarine-launched decoy. TORDEC brings this trusted capability to the surface fleet.

While SONDEC is deployed via the submarine’s signal ejector using modest amounts of compressed air, TORDEC is adapted for surface deployment using either pyrotechnic launchers or compressed air systems. The unit is launched several hundred meters away from the host vessel, where it then activates upon entering the water.

Once deployed, TORDEC mimics a vessel by emitting false sonar echoes, confusing the torpedo’s seeker and luring it away from the actual target. This gives the defending ship critical time to maneuver or take additional protective action, while the torpedo wastes time and fuel chasing the decoy.

Both TORDEC and SONDEC received strong interest at this year’s Undersea Defence Technology (UDT) conference, held at Nova Spektrum in Lillestrøm, Norway. In addition to enthusiastic feedback from visitors and defence professionals, E24 and Naval News featured articles highlighting Scanmatic’s countermeasure systems – underscoring the growing relevance of advanced torpedo defense in today’s naval operations.

At Scanmatic, we take pride in delivering cutting-edge maritime defence solutions developed in Norway, and we look forward to continuing our work with partners and customers across the global defence sector.
