An image combined with measurement data provides better situational awareness than measurements alone. However, for small and lightweight IoT installations, limited power budgets and communication capacity require strict prioritization of the number and types of sensors. Cameras that perform well in the field under Nordic winter conditions often consume more power than is available — especially during the winter months.

The new SM5038 Type 104, despite having a very limited power budget and long battery life, is capable of combining measurements and image transmission through a smart camera interface. This interface controls the camera unit so that image capture and transmission can be triggered by measurement values — for example, when alarm thresholds are exceeded or when unusually rapid changes are detected on the inputs.
When measurement values remain within normal ranges that do not trigger the camera, the camera is completely powered down. This ensures that power consumption remains nearly identical to that of a standard IoT device.
For applications requiring more frequent image transmission, the installation can be expanded with a solar panel or powered by another external source where available.
