TORDEC is an advanced anti-torpedo countermeasure developed in Norway by Scanmatic. The system is designed for surface vessels and is based on technology and experience from SONDEC, our well-established countermeasure for submarines. TORDEC provides surface vessels with an effective and reliable capability to divert modern torpedoes and create critical room for action in a threat situation.
It is developed with high flexibility and is qualified both for pyrotechnic launch using NATO-standard 130 mm ammunition and for our own pneumatic launchers. This ensures compatibility with both existing launcher systems and future solutions.
As the newest member of Scanmatic’s TCM family, TORDEC follows our philosophy that countermeasures must be cost-effective enough to be used in training and exercises. If they are not a natural part of a fleet’s tactics and procedures, they will not be effective in a real situation.
Effective diversion through advanced simulated sonar signatures
When a vessel is threatened by an incoming torpedo, TORDEC is launched to mimic the acoustic signature of the vessel. By generating false sonar echoes and acoustic profiles that appear as a more attractive target than the protected vessel, the system confuses the torpedo’s seeker and draws it away from the actual target.
This tactic gives the vessel valuable time to maneuver, increase distance from the torpedo’s path, or initiate additional protective measures.

The system can be launched from surface vessels either using standard pyrotechnic launchers or by using compressed air in an air launcher.
This makes it compatible with existing launching systems and maritime platforms. - Provides critical reaction time for the operator
By pulling the torpedo away from the protected vessel, TORDEC creates a time window that can be decisive for executing evasive maneuvers or activating additional protection. - Built on field-proven technology from SONDEC
TORDEC is the surface-vessel version of SONDEC, Scanmatic’s sonar decoy developed for submarines. The experience from SONDEC—including acoustic technology, robust design, and operational performance—forms the foundation for TORDEC and ensures a high level of maturity.
